Port Townsend, WA - Jul 2009

We just spent a wonderful week at Point Hudson Marina & RV park in Port Townsend, WA. This park sits out on a peninsula in the Puget Sound and has a marina on one side and RV sites on the other. It is about a block away from downtown Port Townsend and a short walk to all the cute shops and restaurants. This is a shot of the marina - the RV park sits to the left in this photo, in back of that long, white building.
This was our pretty, waterfront view site. We were right on the water and had 180 degree views from east to west -- that gave us spectacular sunrises and sunsets. We were steps from the beach and there was a walking trail that went alongside the water. At night, we left our windows open and could hear the waves breaking on the shore.
How we got to this lovely spot was quite by serendipity. We had taken a drive over to Port Townsend (from Salt Creek Recreation Area - about 60 miles away) to check out the area and also to scope out this particular RV park as well as a few others in the area. I had read that this park had waterfront sites and great views, so when we stopped to inquire about available sites, we were disappointed to learn that all the good sites were pretty much booked for the summer. There were a few available spaces, but they were not view spots and without a view, the sites were pretty unattractive -- just one big gravel parking lot with spaces really close together.
About two weeks later, we were contemplating where we would move to when it was time to leave Salt Creek and we still really wanted to go back and explore the quaint village of Port Townsend. So, just on a whim, I decided to call Point Hudson Marina and ask if perhaps they had any site available just for a few days so we could go spend some time in the town. Well, it was my lucky day because the park manager said they had just gotten a cancellation for a whole week for one of the best (and our favorite) site in the park. Yippee!
The next day we packed up and headed over and were absolutely thrilled from the moment we pulled into our site. The RV park is laid out kind of oddly, but there are a handful of sites that are exceptional. Our spot had no other RV sites on three sides. On one side was a road and the administration buildings, behind us was a driveway and then some distance away was another row of three sites. We thought it was the best of the bunch.

To the northwest, we could see Fort Wordan State Park and from this vantage point, we had great sunsets and sunrises (another post.)

Mostly, the weather was delightful -- sunny, but cool temperatures and mostly clear skies. One day, some dark storm clouds rolled in and pelted us with rain. That evening we even had a lightening and thunder show. It was nothing as severe as the Texas storms that we are used to, but the locals all thought is was exciting. I took this photo at low tide when a narrow of spit of land emerged and I could walk out and look back towards our site.

The storm passed just at sunset and gave us a colorful sky.

And best of all -- a RAINBOW!

We were sad to have to leave at the end of the week, but it is on our "top ten" list of places to return to -- next time with a reservation.
