Salt Creek Rec Area, WA - Jun 2009

Wow -- we LOVE our site at Salt Creek Recreation Area. We are just west of Port Angeles, WA which is in the northwestern corner of the state along the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

This lovely county park sits atop a bluff overlooking The Strait. There are about 35 electric/water sites of which 20 are on a reservation system. The rest are first-come-first-serve and we got (what we think is the best) one of them.

We have spectacular views of the water and all the ships that pass by.


Our site is a few steps away from the water and, at high tide, we can hear the waves crashing on the rocks below. There is a stairway that goes down to the rocks and, at low tide, is a popular area to see tidepools.

The park is operated by Clallum County and is free for day use. In addition to several large, grassy areas to just sit and relax, there is a great playground for kids, a basketball court, horseshoe pits and a ballfield.

We enjoyed having all this open area to walk the dogs.

We arrived mid-week, before school let out and enjoyed a week where the campground was nearly empty. Our site is near the edge of the campground and kind of off in its own loop.

After school let out, the campground was full on most weekends. Ever since then, it's been a pretty steady flow of campers, but there was only one day when the park was filled to capacity.

Had to include this photo of the newly opened Hood Canal bridge. It is a major highway in the area and had been closed for weeks, causing travelers to take a very long detour to get around the canal. I think it is claimed to be the longest floating drawbridge in the country. It was fun to drive over on our way from Belfair to Port Angeles.
