Deception Pass, WA - Aug 2009

While staying in Oak Harbor, we took an excursion to Deception Pass with it's impressive bridge.
Built in the 1930s by the CCC, the bridge connects Whidbey Island to Fidalgo Island (and also the mainland.) The waters below the bridge are known for their turbulence, so watching ships pass through can be pretty exciting.
We walked across the bridge and enjoyed the views, but didn't linger long. Frank was barely comfortable with the height and was gripping the handrail the whole time. I was glued to the rail because the sidewalk afforded very little protection from the traffic zipping by. The narrow bridge forced wider vehicles to travel on the rightmost edge of the road and that caused the side-view mirrors on these wide vehicles (motorhomes especially) to invade the pedestrians path. I feared getting whacked by the mirror of a passing RV -- how ironic would that have been?
From the bridge we could look down and see all those folks lined up and neatly spaced apart -- they are fishing. I wonder how they keep their lines from getting tangled.A glimpse at a colorful bay with a very sweet little beach at the base. The dark stuff in the water is just kelp -- no sea life that we could see.
