Zion Tunnel - Mar 2009

During our 2+ weeks at Zion we drove through this amazing tunnel a half dozen times and each time it was still pretty exciting. The tunnel is 1.1 miles long and was cut through the side of a mountain. There are no lights inside other than sunlight coming through a few windows carved out of the side. Here is a picture of one of the windows.

And a close-up look at the window with a car going by.

Another window view -- this time looking from the inside out.

Because of the narrow confines, large vehicles must drive down the center of the tunnel. A tunnel escort is required and large vehicles must pay $15 for the escort. Two way traffic is stopped while that happens. I caught this tour bus beginning it's escorted trip through the tunnel -- looks like it barely fits.

And the light at the end of the tunnel.
