Lake Abiquiu, NM - Oct 2007

I had read that Riana Campground on Lake Abiquiu was a very scenic campground, so when our plans changed and we found ourselves needing to head towards Albuquerque sooner than planned to get some service work done, we opted to stop along the way and check it out for ourselves. We were pleased to find a picturesque setting -- beautiful turquoise blue lake, carved red cliffs and views for miles. The campground was situated on a high bluff overlooking the lake and the sites were terraced up a hill, so each had a nice view of the lake and surroundings mountains.

We arrived at the lake on a Sunday afternoon assuming we'd have no problem getting a site with hookups. It turned out that there was a group of solo women RVers who were camped there for the week and all the sights were occupied. We ended up having to stay in the dry camping area, but weren't too disappointed as the site we got was huge and right at bluff's edge with a great view of the lake.

We dry camped for two nights before a hookup site became available and then we moved up the hillside to a very nice view spot. We were tempted to stay in the dry camp area, but the combination of below freezing temps in the morning and a furnace that was refusing to work (one reason for heading to Albuquerque for service) encouraged us to move to a spot with electricity so we could use our space heater.

While there, we met Don & Dorothy -- another Lazy Daze couple who had just come from the Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque. Here we are enjoying a gorgeous sunset while doing some serious campfire sitting.

The sunsets here were awesome -- filling the entire sky with color, reflecting off the lake's surface and back lighting the interestingly shaped mesas. If you look closely, you can see our RV in the bottom, right-hand corner of this picture.
