Yule Marble Quarry, Marble, CO - Sep 2007

One of our jaunts while staying at Redstone NFCG was a day trip over to the Yule Marble Quarry . To get to the quarry involved driving up a steep, bumpy dirt road, crossing over a self-pay toll bridge and finally hiking about a half mile. This is the view from the parking lot area near the bridge. The caretaker's cottage is on the left and the marble debris field can be seen on the right.

Yule Marble is famous for its uniform pure white consistency. The marble has been used in The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier as well as the Lincoln Memorial. The hike to the quarry area went by a large cave -- supposidly one of the first areas of exploration. The marble at the cave entrance didn't look all that impressive.

As we meandered down the path, we finally arrived at the impressive, glistening-white marble debris pile. This is where most of the "smaller" chunks of marble are discarded. Visitor's are welcome to take pieces of marble. There is a sign suggesting that you donate $2/pound, but it's on the honor system.

This was just a scenic drive on the road to Marble. The fall foliage was just beginning to color the mountainside.
