Flying A, Ashton, ID - Aug 2006

Without a doubt -- one of the best places we've ever stayed! Where else can you get a full hook-up site, great views of the Tetons, green grass for the dogs to romp in, fresh vegetables from the garden, gorgeous sightseeing opportunities nearby and best of all -- good friends to visit with. Sorry folks, this RV haven is by invitation only and we count our blessings that we were invited for a visit.



The Flying A is a family farm outside of Ashton, Idaho. It spans acres and acres of fields -- just about as far as your eye can see -- and they grow potatoes, wheat, barley and canola. We met Paul & Tawn (who's family owns the farm) when we were next door neighbors at an RV park in Austin. Paul had a business project going on in Austin and Tawn worked at the RV park. We enjoyed their neighborly company for about four months while we waited for Frank's retirment date to happen. Since then, we've kept in touch and when the chance came to meet up with them at Tawn's family farm, we adjusted our travel plans and headed for Ashton.

Tawn & Paul were wonderful hosts as well as tour guides. One morning they invited us to join them for brunch with their friends, so we drove into Driggs, Idaho and had brunch at the Driggs Airfield. This great little cafe had an outdoor patio where we sat and ate and enjoyed the lovely weather and watched as planes landed and took off right beside us. We also had a great view of the Tetons in the distance. How cool is that!

That afternoon, we took an excursion to nearby Cave Falls. Located at the western edge of Yellowstone National Park, it was a very pretty setting. The trip took us from the wheat fields of the Idaho plains up into the pine forested mountains in about a 20 mile drive. The roaring falls were impressive and we even went and stood in the "Cave" that the Falls were named for.

This is Tawn & Pauls' dog "Nugget" having a blast in the river below Cave Falls. She flew across the river as if walking on water. It must have been icy cold. All of our dogs got along great and enjoyed playing together. I know that Rudy & Scotty especially loved having a yard to roam in at the Flying A farm. Most of the campgrounds we stay at require the dogs to be leashed, so having the freedom to roam is a real treat for our dogs.

Our Ashton journal wouldn't be complete without a photo of us in the wheat fields. Frank also wanted a picture of amber waves of grain -- so there you have it. See how far the fields go -- that's just a portion of the Flying A farm -- amazing.
