Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta - Oct 2005

Awesome!

I know it's an overused expression, but it's totally appropriate for this spectacular event. We spent 10 days parked in the dry camping area across the street from the launch field. Almost every morning the 6:30 a.m. "Dawn Patrol" (about a dozen balloons) skimmed overhead and we watched in awe as the balloons lit up in the semi-dark morning sky. Once the Patrol had checked the weather and prevailing winds, the "Mass Ascension" began - filling the skies above us with 700+ colorful balloons. Many balloons drifted directly over our RV - close enough that we could exchange "Good Mornings!" with the occupants.

The Bees (Joey and Lily) were a crowd favorite. Each time they launched, they would begin by holding hands and then, as they rose into the air, they would turn and face each other and "kiss" before separating and going their own ways.


In this photo, Joey Bee appears to be holding a balloon of his own, but it's only a second balloon drifting off in the distance.





Hi Holly! I had to include this shot of the Holly Balloon for my niece. It's also an excellent example of the intricate patterns and colorful designs used in the balloons.




Every launch day was different - sometimes cloudy and sometimes the wind directed the balloons away from our parking area, but on some days the conditions were perfect and we had deep blue skies and gentle winds that kept the balloons hovering just above our heads.


Being from Austin, what more can we say other than "Go Longhorns!" A big "Hello" to all our Austin buddies - we miss you, but we sure don't miss the sweltering summertime heat.



I thought that I might go for a balloon ride for my birthday treat this year, but watching them from the ground was pretty awesome and enough of a treat to satisfy me for this year. Maybe next year, we'll sign up to be on a chase crew and possibly get a free ride. This prop was at the Balloon Museum - also a neat place to visit while at the Balloon Fiesta.
